Global day of recognition of ALS

June 21 is the Global Day of recognition of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

ALS is a degenerative neurological disease that results in the progressive loss of control over the body’s motor functions, from mobility to speech, and is one of the leading causes of neurological disability in young adults. So far there is no cure.

For those with ALS, the loss of control of their motor functions often means severe communication difficulties. Today there are augmentative communication technologies that allow users to communicate verbally. One of these technologies is the www.thevoicekeeper.com

With this program, it is possible to communicate through a synthesized voice which will verbalize everything written. This voice can be generic (from an existing voicebank, which has varied options for age, gender, and origins/accents), a synthesized version of the person’s own voice, or even a voice donated by a third person. (any family member or friend).
